THE STORY

SERVICES

The Hellenic Group provide the retail market in Europe, a one-stop contact for a seamless procurement of garments and accessories by offering full services for production in China, Bangladesh and India. The Group’s offices in Sweden, China, Bangladesh and India are following up each step of the production chain; from development, sourcing, production, quality control to logistics and delivery. In addition, the Group’s Creative Team provides design and product development.

HISTORY

Hellenic Trading was established in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1964. Ilias Manganas, who many consider to be one of the leading figures in starting the apparel trade with Asia, named the company ‘Hellenic’ as a tribute to his homeland of Greece.
In the commencing decades Hellenic went from strength to strength and became one of the leading importers serving the Scandinavian market. In the 80’s Hellenic was importing from several Asian countries including: Thailand, Sri Lanka, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, China and Hong Kong.
In the 90’s this situation changed and the company concentrated more on fewer countries with the leading being China, Bangladesh and India.
Moving into the new millennia the market demands required Hellenic to offer a shorter chain between the customer and the production units. Customers could now be offered a way of working specific to their needs. Hellenic could serve in the capacity of a traditional importer or a dynamic hybrid with the creative elements of an importer but the price structure of a direct supplier.
In 2007, 2009 and 2015 companies were established in Qingdao, China, in Hong Kong, in Dhaka, Bangladesh and in Mumbai and Delhi, India. In China, Bangladesh and India the offices are in partnership with local entrepreneurs; and Hong Kong deals with economic matters for the companies in China and Bangladesh. The strength of this business concept stems from the combination of European thinking and local knowledge. The success of this business model has been proved by the confidence and satisfaction of the company’s customers.
Hellenic Group currently has approximately 90 employees globally with total turnover of approximately US$40 million.

OUR SERVICE OFFERING

The Group offers a shorter chain between customers and local production units in Asia, an approach that is specific to each customer’s needs. Hellenic offers its services as a single point of contact to manage the production of garments in China, Bangladesh and India.
The service offering is divided into two parts. In its basic version it includes: selection of the best manufacturer, price negotiation, quality and delivery control (“Local Services”) but may include the creative part of design and development of collections (“Full-service”).
The service concept signifies that the Group is committed to contribute to a process that includes the following steps:

  • Selection of the most appropriate manufacturer that match customer requirements for quality, quantity, cost and compliance
  • Production planning
  • Continuous follow-up that production is following the plan for quality and delivery
  • Submissions of samples (SMS, Fit- P.P. and S/S-sample)
  • To secure the required quality, our quality departments follow the production process and we provide, for instance, lab-tests for fabrics and chemicals
  • Ongoing communication with the customer about the whole process
  • Delivery monitoring, including shipping
  • Customs clearance
  • Reloading

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

One of our strengths is the design and product development we present to our customers as a complement to their own teams’ designs. Each season we scout the market for new styles and qualities to be developed in our local factories. Our Research and Development teams take the input of seasonal trends and bring new innovations on e.g. yarn qualities, knitting techniques and washes to provide a new dimension to the creative process.
Trend boards are prepared and discussed in pre-collection meetings with customers.
We provide all kinds of samples before order placement
Our close collaboration with our partner factories make it possible to produce our as well as our clients own developed collections at very competitive prices.

MERCHANDISING

At the time of order placement, we select production units that fit the customer’s quality level, cost, delivery dates and compliance demands.
For production planning and order follow-up we have installed a software program for the TNA (time and action plan), which means merchandisers and management can follow every stage of production and apprehend problems before they arise.
Merchandising is the link that will transform the customer’s requirements into reality. Our aim is timely and accurate communication to ensure smooth execution and timely delivery. The mantra for our merchandising teams is: follow-up follow-up follow-up.

ISO 9001

In the office in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Group implemented in 2013 the certification of ISO 9001 (“quality management system”). Following ISO 9001, the Group get an effective monitoring and control of each production order in all aspects. All materials and accessories are tested prior to production.

QUALITY

We know that quality is of utmost importance to our clients, therefore we have the highest focus in this area.
After the start of production, quality control, in-line inspections and final inspections is monitored by our professional teams of Merchandisers, Technicians and Quality Assurance, both locally and in Sweden, to ensure that the product quality is maintained and to the full satisfaction of our customers. The quality assurance includes all aspects of the garment including fit, tailoring and color strength as well as CSR, chemical and environmental aspects

DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS

The logistics department takes over where the production departments’ work is completed, the logistics departments’ has long experience of ensuring efficient transports and have extensive knowledge of the documentation necessary to ensure smooth customs clearance. Because our customers purchase under different delivery conditions the logistics departments’ responsibility differ from case to case.
A professional, smooth and accurate logistics process is essential for timely delivery.

PRODUCT OFFERING

The Group co-operates with manufacturers that can provide garments and accessories in many areas. The Group’s product offerings include the following genders, lines and products:

Partner Factories

The Group and its local partners have under many years worked with and evaluated local factories. This evaluation of factories has included the quality, capabilities, flexibility and effectiveness of production, compliance to code of conduct and environmental aspects, the timeliness of delivery and pricing of their products.
The factories that have been able to live up to the Group’s requirements have become co-operation partner factories that has given the Group long-term relationships with stability and security and with the right profile for the Group’s customers.
The Group has about 40 such co-operation partner factories in China, 20 in Bangladesh and approximately 15 in India.

CSR, ENVIRONMENTAL AND CHEMICAL ASPECTS

CSR

The Group use a Code of Conduct, which is developed by the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) where we are a member. The Group has its own CSR departments in China, Bangladesh and India, which constantly monitors the companies’ compliance with codes of conduct. Most of the Group’s producers are certified by BSCI, Sedex, SA 8000, WRAP and Oekotex. The Group has a continuous dialogue with the factories for a common improvement that leads to a positive development.
Safety is one of the points of the Group’s Code of Conduct. The Group’s CSR staff make regular and even unannounced visits to check that all safety equipment is available and used (e.g. safety gloves when cutting and goggles, equipment against fires, etc.).

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS

To be updated in the chemicals area, the Group are members of the Kemikaliegruppen – “the Chemicals Group” led by SVEREA IVF. The Group are also members of the Textilimportörerna – “Textile Importers” whose chemical guide the Group follow in its business conditions with manufacturers. Textile Importers uses SVEREA as advisors in these matters.
Projects relating to purify water for production (STWI) is high on the corporate agenda. The Group also have suppliers who manufacture Organic Products, from yarn to finished product. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certificates has been obtained regarding yarn, fabric, finished products and packaging materials. Started in 2016, the Group is also able to provide BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) and sustainable cotton growing.
We are participant of BSCI and in our branches we have CSR departments who are responsible in following up the social compliance commitments of factories. We are also members of the Swedish Chemicals Group and are always up to date on information on authorization and restrictions of substances used in textile and leather processes and products. Our production units in Bangladesh have been audited through Accord and have proved their commitment by following remediation requirements as necessary.
Our company in Dhaka is ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certified which means they have an Environmental Management Policy and are conscious of the impact on the environment and how to reduce this.
